Dear SDG ARES,

To prepare for the upcoming November Hospital Drill, ARES will conduct an optional Winlink Telnet Desktop Exercise that starts on 9/1/19 and runs to the end of the month (9/30/19). This exercise is for Winlink newbies and masters. If you don't do Winlink, this will be a good time to start.

This week, Winlink Elmers are fine-tuning the exercise steps. We hope to roll-out the exercise plan this weekend.

The primary goals of the Exercise are:

A. To encourage ARES members who have not yet downloaded the free Winlink software to install the software and play with it so that they understand Winlink-speak. All are welcome to participate in this Desktop Exercise. If you have any questions, check for answers at https://winlink.org/content/winlink_book_knowledge or ask me via private email K6RJF.ROB@gmail.com

B. To flex the skills of the Winlink Support Group with emphasis on typical hospital drill reports.

This is a software training exercise, so you may do all of the steps on a computer connected to the internet. The Winlink software calls the internet mode, "Telnet." You do not need to have a Winlink radio for this Desktop Exercise. If you know which buttons to push in the Winlink software, during a drill you can stand in for other Winlink operators when they step away from the Winlink station.

More later.
Thanks.

. . . Rob

People,

You might want to share this with your Groups.

This group, SDG ARES Winlink is doing exceptionally good work training a growing cadre of competent Winlink users in the northern Mexico - Southern California Region.

Their exercises, much like StanARES’s exercises on a larger scale, are extremely well structured and very tutorial in nature.

Watching real world incident responses you will see well organized models of effective use of Winlink during communications emergencies.

There is a Winlink message viewer available to all which you can use to review Winlink traffic during or after an incident or exercise..

Anyone needing a little handholding to get started with Telnet Winlink - let me know, I or someone else you know who uses Winlink will be happy to help get you started. Think of it as another Windows Email client because that is exactly what Telnet Winlink mode is.

Separate learning Winlink from the learning how to use Packet, Pactor, and any of the many excellent software Modems and TNC replacements and it all gets much easier to learn as distinct pieces.

Good afternoon all,

This has taken me a little longer than I expected. A few times I had to clarify steps but we worked it out and here is the step-by-step guide to get members setup for the exercise. Let me know if there are issues or something doesn’t make sense. I tried to be as thorough as possible.

To avoid filling mailboxes I posted it to our website, here is the link:

Feedback is welcome. Forward to your members, trying to get as many people as possible to fill the SDG mailbox. Let’s get those winlinks set up!
