Just received my GMRS license

Greetings. New member here. I just obtained my GMRS license, WRVR588. Now I'm looking for a radio. I havent narrowed it down yet, there are so many radios available. Not looking for the cheapest radio and not looking for the Tiffany of radios. Not afraid to spend a little money though. A mobile and a hand held eventually. Any advice and or suggestions regarding radios welcome.

Hello Scott and thanks for the reply. Happy New Year. The Wouxun KG-935G is on my list. Wouxon seems to have a pretty good line of radios. Others on my list is the KG-905G and the KG-S88G. I'm also looking at a Midland mobile. I see you guys are planning a field day this month at Sportsman Warehouse. I'll try to stop by.

I just picked up a Wouxan KG-S88G as a portable. I have had it for only a week but so far it has been good. I also put together Midland MXT-500 as a transportable base. It works great too. I have an MXT-575 to put in my vehicle waiting to buy a new vehicle to install it in. All have been good options

Very cool, I have the same gear. MXT-500 set up as a base unit, powered by an Astron 20amp linear power supply and a KG-S88G. Very happy with them

We definitely are. In addition to the usual HF activity, I'm going to be bringing out a lot of 2m/70cm & GMRS EmComm gear and will be operating those stations all weekend. I will also be bringing about 30 different types of HAM & GMRS HT's for people to check out and see first-hand.
Scott - Any update on the GMRS repeater that you had said might be going up in the southern part of the county?

Very interested in learning about this new future repeater. I found a GMRS repeater on-line that was said to be on badger hill. I entered the frequency and pl tones but no dice! Possibly it’s off line. Would love to see a GMRS repeater on blueridge.

Was not really thinking much in terms of GMRS when I joined up, though I just got that license (WRXK373) as well as a General upgrade (KO6ACG). Of course all I have are a couple cheap RadioShack FRS/GMRS handhelds. Not sure if I have a valid use case for GMRS since I'm pretty much a lone wolf these days. Thinking I should get something to have handy during the upcoming event though.

Sorry about the late reply. In case you haven't found out already:
We have two GMRS repeaters up on Park Ridge, 7575' elevation. It is available to all those properly licensed, and their families. They are: 462.700 and 462.675. And just like all our ham repeaters, they each require an input (PL, or CTCSS) tone of 103.5. They also transmit a tone of 103.5 to allow you to ONLY hear when our repeaters are transmitting. These have been up since last summer and have quite a large footprint, especially the 462.700. I have made contacts from Merced, Kettleman City, and even almost as far as the Kern/San Luis Obispo County line. Of course, there are some "shadows" as with any repeater.
